Tigers Nearly Record Second Shut-out in 18-1 Home Win Over Cypress Wednesday

RIVERSIDE -- Coming "this close" to posting its second shut-out of the season, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's water polo squad defeated the Cypress College Chargers, 18-1, in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game Wednesday (Oct. 5) at the Riverside Aquatic Center on the RCC campus.

Riverside City (16-1 overall, 3-0 OEC) led, 7-0, at the end of the first quarter, 13-0 at halftime and 15-0 heading into the fourth quarter. The Tigers built an 18-0 lead until Cypress broke the shut-out with a goal at the 37-second mark. Three weeks ago, RCC blanked Santa Ana, 24-0 (Sept. 14).

A trio of Tigers led with three goals each as sophomore attacker Mary Myers (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15), sophomore attacker Sarina Briseno (Riverside / Riverside Poly HS '15) and frosh attacker Anay Ramirez (Riverside / M.L. King HS) found the back of the net thrice.

Five Tigers had three steals each and the team had a total of 25 swipes. Playing only in the first half, sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Olmos (Redlands / Redlands East Valley HS '15) had two saves for RCC. Frosh goalie Breana Ortiz (Fontana / Etiwanda HS) played the entire second half and had one save and the last-minute goal allowed.

Riverside will next be in action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, when it travels to face the host Fullerton College Hornets in an OEC game at 3 p.m.
