Tigers (2-0) Open Season With One-sided Wins Over Santa Rosa & San Joaquin Delta Friday

SACRAMENTO -- The Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's water polo squad opened its season at the Ninth Annual River Rage Tournament which is being hosted by American River College.

Riverside City (2-0 overall) played its first game of the season against the Santa Rosa Junior College Bearcubs where it jumped out to a 5-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back as they cruised to an 18-3 victory. Sophomore two-meter offense Emily Martin (Yucaipa / Yucaipa HS '15) -- who is pictured -- led all scorers with 4 goals.

Frosh attacker Anay Ramirez (Riverside / M.L. King HS '16), and sophomore attackers Citlali Salazar (Eastvale / Eleanor Roosevelt HS '16) and Sarina Briseno (Riverside / Poly HS '15) each added two goals. Salazar added three assists and two steals, and sophomore attacker Mary Myers (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) had one goal, two assists and six steals.

Sophomore goalie Ariana Olmos (Redlands / Redlands East Valley HS '15) had two saves and two assists, and frosh goalie Breanna Ortiz (Fontana / Etiwanda HS) came on to register three saves and two assists.

In the second game of the day, the Tigers faced off with the San Joaquin Delta College (SJDC) Mustangs. The teams were tied at 2 at the end of the first quarter and then RCC clung to a 5-4 lead at halftime. However, the Tigers hit their stride in the second half, outscoring Delta, 10-3, and winning the game, 15-7. Myers and freshman Josce Godinez (Menifee / Vista Murrieta HS) each had three goals.

Goalie Olmos went the distance and logged two saves and one assist.

The Tigers resume tournament action on Saturday, Sept. 10, and will play the host American River College Beavers at 8 a.m. before facing Las Positas College at 12:20 p.m.
