Riverside Wins Twice in Pool Play Friday in Battle At The Beach action at Cerritos

NORWALK -- Extending its current win streak to seven, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's water polo squad opened play at the annual Battle At The Beach Tournament Friday (Oct. 23) with a pair of pool D wins at Cerritos College.

Riverside routed the Sierra College Wolverines, 15-1, and then shaded the San Diego Mesa College Olympians, 8-5.

Against Sierra, Riverside led from the start: 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, 10-1 at halftime and 12-1 after three quarters.

In the win over Sierra, frosh attacker Mary Myers (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) led the Tigers with three goals and added one assist and two steals. Frosh attacker Citlali Salazar (Eastvale / Eleanor Roosevelt HS '15) added two goals, one assist and led with four steals. Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Chang (Laie, Oahu, HI / Kahuku HS '13) played the entire first half and logged three saves. Frosh GK Ariana Olmos (Redlands / Redlands East Valley HS '15) played the entire second half and recorded four saves.

Against SDMC, RCC trailed, 2-1, at the end of the first quarter, but then turned it around and led, 5-3, at halftime and 7-3 after three quarters.

In the win over the Olympians, Mary Myers had five goals, zero assists and two steals to lead the Tigers. Chang made 18 saves and added two assists for RCC.

Riverside (18-2 overall) continues tournament action on Saturday, Oct. 24, with a pair of games, the first of which will be against the Fullerton College Hornets at 10:20 a.m. RCC's second game on Saturday will be at 4:10 p.m. against either Golden West College or San Joaquin Delta College.
