Indoor Volleyball Drops Fourth Straight

It was the third time the Riverside City College indoor volleyball team played a ranked opponent in as many games as they faced off against the No. 11 Orange Coast College Pirates in conference action. The Tigers pushed the Pirates to the limit in the first set, but were unable to get over the hump losing in three sets by the final scores of 24-26, 16-25 and 15-25.

The first set was a thriller as the lead teeter-tottered throughout the entire set. Riverside held a one-point lead with an opportunity to win, but Orange Coast tied it up and followed with three straight points to close it out.

Freshman Maggie Aburto snapped her six match double-digit kill streak, but still paced her team on offense with seven kills. She was sidelined the majority of the third set due to injury. Additionally, Aburto recorded a team-high 10 digs – most of them coming from diving attempts.

Sophomore Keeley Hober manned the net for six kills with three total blocks, while freshman Jessica Lepe and sophomore Miranda Gates each recorded five kills.

Sophomore Hailey Gray earned the start at setter and recorded 14 assists to go along with seven digs. Lepe and freshman Ashley Elias-Romero had nine digs. Elias-Romero added one ace marking the ninth-consecutive match where she has recorded at least one service ace. She has 17 on the season.

Riverside (4-7, 1-4 OEC) will continue action on the road Wednesday, October 6 against the Santiago Canyon College Hawks at 6 p.m.
