Golden West Sweeps Riverside, 3-0, Friday Ending Tigers' Program-best OEC Start

RIVERSIDE -- After winning its first five Orange Empire Conference (OEC) matches for the first time in the program's history, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's volleyball team saw itself get swept by the visiting Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers, 3-0, by the set scores of 27-25, 25-16, 25-20, in an OEC match Friday evening (Oct. 7) at historic Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.

GWC sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Paperny (Culver City HS), who stands well over six feet tall, pounded down a match-high 21 kills (four errors) in 39 attack attempts for a .436 hitting percentage and also added eight digs and two block solos to power the Rustlers (9-2 overall, 5-1 OEC).
In the first set, Paperny had eight kills and four digs and GWC hit .225 as a team (16 kills) and GWC set the tone with a 27-256 first-set win which featured 13 ties and nine lead changes. Conversely, RCC hit only .030 (seven kills, six errors, 33 attempts).
The second set saw Paperny add another eight kills as the Rustlers hit .267 (12 kills, four errors, 30 attempts) and RCC hit a minus-.031 (eight kills, nine errors). RCC trailed, 0-3, 3-7, and 4-9, before battling to an 11-11 tie. GWC then took a 16-11 lead and was never headed again.
In the third set, Paperny and frosh outside Jasmine Gonzalez (Long Beach / Millikan HS) each had five kills as the Rustlers hit .286 as a team. The Tigers hit a little better, .100 on seven kills and four errors.
Also for Golden West (9-2, 5-1 OEC), sophomore setter Kate Stanjevich (Long Beach / Millikan HS) had a match-high 26 set assists and frosh libero Sydney Siegel (Phoenix, AZ / Thunderbird [AZ] HS) had a match-high 14 digs.
For Riverside (11-4, 5-1 OEC), which hit only .032 in the match and had only 22 kills as a team, sophomore outside hitter Lauren Wells (Corona / Woodcrest Christian HS '15) had a team-high six kills, sophomore setter Sabrina Gonzaga (MOreno Valley / Citrus Hill HS '14) had a team-high 12 set assists and frosh libero Paula Romero (Riverside / Riverside Poly HS '14) had a team-high 13 digs.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. when Golden West hosts its district-rival Orange Coast and Riverside visits the Cypress College Chargers in a pair of OEC matches.
