Riverside Sweeps Cerritos, 3-0, in Non-conference Match Wednesday

RIVERSIDE -- Posting its fifth victory of the season and fourth via a sweep, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's volleyball team swept the visiting Cerritos College Falcons, 3-0, Wednesday evening (Sept. 14).

Riverside City (5-2 overall) blanked Cerritos (5-5) by the set scores of 25-16, 25-12, 25-17.

In all three sets, Riverside trailed early, only to come roaring back.

In the first set, Cerritos led, 4-3, before RCC sophomore outside hitter Lauren Wells (Corona / Woodcrest Christian HS '15) and sophomore outside hitter Marissa Vialpando (Moreno Valley / Riverside - Notre Dame HS '15), respectively, registered five kills and four kills to pace RCC. Wells added four digs, as did frosh defensive specialst Paula Romero (Riverside / Poly HS '14).

In the second set, RCC trailed, 8-9, but then sophomore middle hitter Tiarah McDaniel (Compton / Paramount HS '14 / Cerritos CC) -- a former (2014) Cerritos Falcon -- was at the service as RCC turned it around to lead 17-9. RCC sophomore outside hitter Huafa Saulala (Morgan Hill / Live Oak HS '13 / BYU-Hawai'i) closed out the set with a kill.

In the third set, Cerritos led, 2-0, before the Tigers came back.

Wells led the Tigers with a match-high 13 kills and a co-match-high 11 digs. Vialpando added nine kills. Sophomore setter Sabrina Gonzaga (Perris / Citrus Hill '15) had a match-high 25 assists. Romero also had a match-high 11 digs.

For Cerritos, a trio of Falcons -- frosh OH Grace Mendez (King City HS), sophomore OH Monica Vega (South Gate HS) and sophomore MB Jasmine McNeal (Long Beach Poly HS) -- each had four kills. Sophomore setter Lorinet Marquez (Cerritos HS) had a team-high 19 assists and frosh defensive specialist Daisy Segura (Cerritos HS) had a team-high nine digs.

Riverside returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16, when it visits the Fullerton College Hornets to open Orange Empire Conference (OEC) action in a 6 p.m. match.
