Playing another solid match, but coming up a little short

Orange Coast College Pirates 3, at Riverside City Tigers 2
Orange Coast (7-2, 2-2 OEC) won by the set scores of 25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-11, over Riverside (5-7, 1-3 OEC). OCC leads in the all-time series between the two teams, 40-15, and has won the last six meetings and 17 of the last 18 in the series.

The Pirates were led by freshman outside hitter Sierra Brown (Newport Harbor HS), who had a team-high 18 kills. Freshman setter Megan Ritchie (Snow Valley, UT) had 42 assists and sophomore libero Kiana Nicio (West Torrance HS) registered a whopping 30 digs.

For Riverside, the Tigers were led by sophomore outside hitter Cherylain Dizon (Redlands East Valley HS) with a match-high 19 kills. Sophomore setter Jennifer Norton (Highland / Redlands East Valley HS) led with a match-high 43 assists. Freshman defensive specialist Sara Kelly (Riverside / John W. North HS) had a team-high 18 digs.

In the first set, RCC led, 18-14, before OCC took a 19-18 lead en route to the 25-20 win.

In the second set, Riverside broke the set's fifth tie at 12-12, led, 17-12, and won going away, 25-15.

The third set was arguably the most entertaining of the match as there were 16 ties and eight lead changes. A pair of OCC attack errors gave RCC a 23-21 lead and the Tigers kept the Pirates at bay, 25-22. Dizon's fourth kill of the set gave RCC a 24-21 lead before a Pirate attack error ended the game.

In the fourth set, OCC freshman outside hitter Kayla Mayer (Mission Viejo HS) had three kills down the stretch to aid the Pirates' 25-18 set win.

In the fifth and final set, as is usually the case, the first team to jump out to a lead, usually wins. OCC led, 2-0, 7-2, and 12-6, before going on to a 15-11 set win.

Both teams return to OEC action on Friday, Oct. 18, when Orange Coast visits the Irvine Valley College Lasers and Riverside visits the Fullerton College Hornets at 6 p.m.
