Tigers Win Both Matches at the Riverside Quadrangular Tournament

RIVERSIDE – Winning both of their matches, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers clawed their way back to .500 with 3-0 wins over the Cerro Coso College Coyotes and the Allan Hancock College (AHC) Bulldogs in the Second Annual Riverside Quadrangular Tournament at Catherine Huntley Gymnasium Friday (Sept. 20) afternoon.
 
In the day's other action, the Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties also won a pair of matches by the score of 3-0 over both Allan Hancock and Cerro Coso. MSAC (6-1) defeated AHC, 25-21, 25-19, 25-12, and then swept past Cerro Coso, 25-15, 25-22, 25-11.
 
Riverside (4-4) defeated Cerro Coso (4-5) by the scores of 25-13, 25-9, and 25-11, and then blanked Allan Hancock (1-7), 25-9, 25-15, and 25-18. It was the first meeting in the history for Riverside against each club.
 
In RCC's first match, 13 of 15 Tigers saw action as sophomore outside hitter Deborah Catanese (Corona / Centennial HS) led the way with nine kills, sophomore setter Jennifer Norton (Highland / Redlands East Valley HS) led with 20 assists (in only two sets) and freshman libero Sarah Kelly (Riverside / John W. North HS) led with six digs (all in only one set). For Cerro Coso, Nora Sellberg led with seven kills, setter Candace Perez had five assists and Ashley Sherrick had 12 digs.
 
Against AHC, the Tigers were paced by Catanese with 15 kills, Norton with 24 assists, and Kelly with ten digs and five service aces, including three straight in the first set. For AHC, freshman middle blocker Gabrielle Lecates (Eagle River HS) led the Bulldogs with seven kills, freshman setter Nikki Friend (Lompoc / Cabrillo HS) had 12 assists and sophomore outside hitter / libero Ambar Alehy Mendoza (Santa Maria / Pioneer Valley HS) had ten digs.
 
Riverside will be idle for two weeks until Friday, Oct. 4, when it hosts the Irvine Valley College Lasers to open Orange Empire Conference action in a 6 p.m. match. All of RCC's remaining home matches will be played in legendary Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.
 
MSAC will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when it hosts Irvine Valley in a 6 p.m. Also on Sept. 25, AHC will host the Bakersfield College Renegades in a Western State Conference match. Cerro Coso will visit the Santa Ana College Dons on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in a 7 p.m. non-conference match at SAC's Bill Cook Gymnasium.
