Women’s Tennis Dominates in Season Opener

After experiencing one of the strongest season to date, the Riverside City College women's tennis team looked to pick up right where they left off against the San Diego City College Knights on Thursday. They accomplished this successfully by routing the Knights in a 9-0 match sweep.

A familiar duo in sophomore tandem Torrey Mateljan and Maxelle Bernie held down the top doubles slot and did not skip a beat. They worked to an 8-0 victory. Freshman Keeley Arendt and sophomore Miranda Cardenas cruised to an 8-2 victory in the second slot, while the Tigers third doubles squad won via forfeit.

Bernie acted as the top singles player for the first time in her career and won in two sets at scores reading 6-0, 6-0. Arendt followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the number two singles, while freshman Monica Madrid earned a two-set victory as the number three at 6-0, 6-1.

Riverside (1-0) will continue action on the road against Santa Barbara on Friday, January 31 at 2 p.m.
