Tigers Settle for Second at Chaffey Invite; Myers Wins 100-yard Backstroke

PERRIS -- Finally gaining a first-place finish, but unable to hold its lead after day 1 (of 2) of the Chaffey Invitational, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's swimming and diving team settled for second place among nine other teams after competition Saturday (Mar. 11) at Citrus Hill High School.

Riverside had collected 268 points after the first day of competition, but wound up with 707 points to gain second place. San Diego Mesa College took top honors with 745 points. In third place was Palomar College (691), followed by Mt. San Antonio (482.50), Citrus (346), East Los Angeles (264), Rio Hondo (128), Grossmont (125.5), host Chaffey (82) and Santa Ana (38).

Among the highlights were RCC sophomore Mary Myers (Riverside - M.L. King HS '15), who won the 100--yard backstroke (1:00.31) and finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.79). On Friday, Myers finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (:25.73).

RCC sophomore Emily Martin (Yucaipa - Yucaipa HS '15) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.61) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.48).

The Tigers finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:50.75, and third in the 200-yard medley relay (2:02.91) and 400-yard medley relay.

with the quartet of sophomores Kelly Perez (Riverside / John W. North HS), Citlali Salazar (Eastvale - Eleanor Roosevelt HS '15), Jacqueline Johnson (Temescal Canyon HS '15) and  doing the honors.

Riverside will be idle from competition until Friday, Mar. 24, when it participates in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Meet #2 which will be held at Golden West College in Huntington Beach. Meet start time is 12 p.m.
