Women’s Basketball Splits at COC Crossover

The Riverside City College women's basketball traveled up north last weekend to compete in the College of the Sequoias Crossover. They faced off against a pair of Northern competitors and made it out with a 30-point win over Porterville, but were clipped by host Sequoias.

The Tigers defeated Porterville, 83-53, for their largest margin of victory so far this season. They shot an effective 49.2 percent from the floor encompassing a 33.3 shooting percentage from long range. Riverside limited their turnovers to eight fewer than Porterville, while outrebounding them 41-33.

Four players landed in double-digits led by sophomore Neveah Manning. She recorded her second-consecutive double-double and third double-double of the season after dropping 17 points and racking up 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Maxine Najera matched her double-double by hitting 14 points and corralling 10 boards. She made it to the line eight times and hit six of her free throws, while Manning was a flawless 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Freshman Makayla Roberts continued to impress in a starting role leading to 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The bench brigade put up some quality numbers highlighted by sophomore Ayana Bourgeois. She finished with 11 points in 12 minutes of action. Freshman Antieya Brown chipped in seven points and five rebounds.

In the loss to Sequoias, the Tigers were playing catchup the entire game. Manning was stronger than ever with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Roberts followed with 14 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists.

They struggled from the free throw line by shooting a hair over 50 percent despite owning a decent 42 percent from the floor.
