Tigers Haul in Seventh-Consecutive Conference Win

The Riverside City College women's basketball team has been on a tear in the recent month by winning five-consecutive Orange Empire Conference (OEC) contests, thus putting themselves in third place. The Tigers looked to continue that trend in a conference showdown against the Saddleback College Gauchos at home on Wednesday night. After a close contest in the opening 20 minutes of play, Riverside pulled away in the third quarter leading to a 64-55 win.

It was the third quarter that distanced the Tigers from the Gauchos as they outscored them 20-8. Saddleback struck first out of the gate, but Riverside quickly responded with two points off the hand of freshman guard Dyani Brewer. Sophomore forward Dayna Dewitt followed by working her way to the charity stripe hitting one of her two free throws. Sophomore forward Kierra Roberts pocketed a steal on the following possession and set up a jumper for sophomore guard Adrianna Garcia leading to an eight-point advantage with the score at 37-29.

The Tigers closed the third quarter on a 14-2 run. Roberts kicked off the stretch with a layup, backed by a layup from Brewer. Freshman guard Trinity Vasquez, who assisted on three shots during the stretch, capped the run with the final five points leading to a 49-35 advantage.

Despite Saddleback outscoring the Tigers in the fourth quarter, Riverside obtained a sizable lead to halt a comeback attempt leading to a 64-55 win.

Dewitt was one rebound shy of a double-double as she flushed a team-high 18 points and hauled in nine boards. Roberts experienced the opposite shorting of a double-double as she was one-point shy after earning 15 boards and dropping nine points.

Brewer was electric off the bench by recording 19 points to go along with four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Sophomore guard Bianca Nelson dished out seven assists in a starting role.

Riverside (14-10, 10-3 OEC) will wrap up conference pay on Friday, February 22 at home as they host the Copper Mountain College Fighting Cacti at 7 p.m.
