Riverside Controls the Hornets in Conference Opener

In their first game in over three weeks, the Riverside City College women's basketball team traveled to Fullerton College on Wednesday night to take on the Hornets in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) opener. In a game that saw just a pair of lead changes, it was the Tigers who prevailed by the final score of 63-52.

Despite a mediocre shooting night that saw Riverside record a 35.1 shooting percentage and a 31.3 mark from beyond the arc, it was their defense that held the Hornets to under 17 points in each quarter of play. The Hornets held one lead that did not exceed one point while the Tigers held an advantage as high as 13 points leading to their win. Furthermore, the Tigers held Fullerton to under 13 percent from three point range.

The Tigers recorded 38 points in the paint and earned 17 points off second chance opportunities. The majority of the points down low came from sophomore forward Dayna Dewitt who finished with 20 points. She protected the paint on the opposite end of the floor by recording two blocks and hauling in six rebounds.

Freshman guard Trinity Vasquez was electric by recording her first-career double-double by flushing 17 points and hauling in 13 rebounds. Her rebound total acts as a career-high as well. Freshman Dyani Brewer saw 23 minutes of action and scored 12 points leading the bench brigade.

Riverside (5-7, 1-0 OEC) will continue action on Friday, January 11 for a conference showdown against the Cypress College Chargers at home at 7 p.m. Follow the live stream on Riverside Athletics YouTube Channel.
