Women’s Basketball Places Third in Palomar Tournament

The Riverside City College women's basketball team competed in the Palomar Invitational this past weekend and squared off against some of the top competitors in the state. The Tigers went 2-1 on the weekend and hauled in the third-place trophy after defeating Grossmont on Saturday by the final score of 77-49.

Despite falling to the East Los Angeles College Huskies, 71-79, the Tigers rebounded and played one of their strongest contests against Grossmont. They minimized turnovers by committing a lowly nine while forcing Grossmont into committing 15. They capitalized by scoring 17 points off of the Griffin turnovers. Riverside did not have the strongest shooting mark from the floor, but their 38 points in the paint and 61 rebounds proved their utter dominance.

Freshman guard Dyani Brewer carted the hottest hand as she flushed a career-high 23 points. She shot 50 percent from the floor (9-for-18) that included four three pointers. She was three rebounds shy of recording a double-double and dished out six assists.

Sophomore forward Dayna Dewitt recorded her fourth-straight double-digit scoring game by finishing with 18 points. She was two rebounds shy of a double-double after crashing the boards for eight rebounds. She was named to the All-Tournament team after finishing in double-digits in all three games and recording a double-double against East L.A.

Freshman guard Trinity Vasquez played 37 minutes and recorded eight points while dishing out a team-high eight assists and racking up 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kierra Roberts was a vacuum down low as seen in a game-high 14 rebounds – 10 coming on the offensive end.

Riverside (3-4) will participate in the College of the Sequoias Tournament and face off against San Joaquin Delta on Thursday, November 29 at 7 p.m.
