Women’s Basketball Breaks into Regional Rankings

A blend of a veteran presence triggered with fresh blood can act as an effective recipe for success. So far this season, the Riverside City College women's basketball team has utilized this combination to the fullest extent by beginning their season with a record of 7-5. They have broken into the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) southern rankings at tied for 15th following a consolation championship victory at the 41st Annual Gilcrest Tournament.

Riverside is currently riding a three-game winning streak highlighted by a 77-71 consolation championship win over the south's 14th ranked Cerritos College. The Tigers dropped their opening-round contest to the College of Sequoias, but rallied back with victories over the north's 12th ranked Solano and Reedley.

The Tigers are undefeated thus far on their home hardwood as seen in a championship win in the 2017 Riverside "Earn Our Stripes" Tournament.

Sophomore guard Dejah Wright (Moreno Valley, CA) leads the charge for the Tigers by posting a 19.3 points-per-game mark which ranks 13th in the state. She has landed in double-digit scoring in every game so far this season and has scored 15 or more points in six of the seven victories. Her 44-point showing against Grossmont on November 10th snapped the single-game scoring record held by current head coach Alicia Berber.

Following suit is freshman point guard Kimari Hollis (Moreno Valley, CA) who is averaging 13 points-per-game. She has hit a hot streak of late by finishing in double-digits the past four games. She recently netted a season-high 22 points in the opening game of the Gilcrest Tournament. Furthermore, she has run the point position effectively by averaging 4.8 assists-per-game which leads her squad.

Sophomore forward Joana Adams (Palm Springs, CA) follows close behind with a 12.8 points-per-game mark while starting in all 12 games. She has strung together a well-rounded season thus far by tying for first on her team with 7.3 rebounds-per-game. She shares the top spot with fellow sophomore forward Darricka Hewitt (Riverside, CA). She is second in steals-per-game with 1.3 as well.

The Tigers look to make more waves and wrap up 2017 paly at the Glendale Crossover beginning this Wednesday, December 20th against LA Southwest at 1 p.m.
