Women’s Basketball Rattles Off Three-Straight Leading to Consolation Championship Win

Women’s Basketball Rattles Off Three-Straight Leading to Consolation Championship Win

The Riverside City College women's basketball squad hit the road this past weekend for the 41st Annual Gilcrest Tournament to wrap up November play and lead into the beginning of December action. After falling in the first round to Sequoias, the Tigers rattled off three-straight victories leading to a consolation tournament championship victory over Cerritos.

The Tigers proved they can remain cool under pressure. In the final three games of the tournament, Riverside won all three contest by no more than a seven-point spread.

Championship Consolation Game

The Tigers displayed proper strength coming from their starting five with four players landing in double-digit scoring en route to a 77-71 victory over Cerritos. Sophomore guard Joana Adams (Palm Springs, CA) paced the squad by dropping 17 points and hauling eight boards – two shy of recording a double-double. Sophomore forward Darricka Hewitt (Riverside, CA), sophomore guard Dejah Wright (Moreno Valley, CA), and freshman guard Kimari Hollis (Moreno Valley, CA) each recorded 17 points as well. For Hollis, it was her fourth-consecutive game in double-digit scoring.

Semifinal Consolation Game

A strong performance by the starting five led the Tigers past Reedley in a tight 67-61 victory. An 18-point showing from Hollis at the point highlighted the performances. She utilized a 7-for-11 clip from the floor to go along with four rebounds and a set of assists. Wright was an aggressor on the offensive end by making her way to the free throw line for a total of 16 attempts. She flushed 11 leading to a 16 point, five rebound showing. Hewitt dominated the board to haul in 14 rebounds and dropping 17 points for her first double-double of the season.

Game Three

The Tigers rebounded after their opening-round loss to defeat Solano, 55-52, for the second time this season. The Tiger defense allowed just one player on Solano to finish in double-digit scoring. Riverside's guard lay was strong as Hollis (7-for-13) and Wright (7-for-18) each finished with 19 points. Hollis dumped off six assists and hauled in five rebounds, while Hewitt recorded a team-high 10 rebounds.
