Tigers Lose, 81-74, in Overtime to Orange Coast Friday; RCC Hosts Santa Ana Wednesday

RIVERSIDE -- Perhaps showing the effects of a nine-day layoff, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team lost its Orange Empire Conference (OEC) opener, 81-74, in overtime to the Orange Coast College (OCC) Pirates Friday evening (Jan. 6) at RCC's historic Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.
Riverside City (13-5 overall, 0-1 OEC), ranked No. 7 in the Southland and No. 13 in the state, hadn't played since a win at Rio Hondo (Dec. 28).
Orange Coast (13-7 overall, 1-1 OEC) was in charge for most of the game until the Tigers forged a 71-71 tie at the end of regulation. But the Pirates scored the first eight points of the extra session to take control.
OCC sophomore guard Michelle Wu (Fountain Valley HS) poured in a game-high 21 points in 39 minutes to pace the Pirates. Frosh guard Sydney Driggs (Irondale {MN} HS) added 17 markers for OCC.
RCC was led by frosh guard Dejah Wright (valley View HS), who came off the bench to toss in 15 points. Sophomore guard Chiderah Uzowuru (Roosevelt HS) added 13 points. Sophomore forward Paradise Hanchett (Rancho Verde HS) had four points and a game-high 17 rebounds as RCC outrebounded OCC, 58-38.
The next action for RCC will be on Wednesday, Jan. 11, when the Tigers host the Santa Ana College Dons at 5 p.m.
