SAN MARCOS -- Falling from the ranks of the unbeaten, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team won its first two games of the inaugural Palomar College Comet Classic presented by the Fegan Family last weekend (Nov. 18-20) before losing to the host Comets in the championship game.
Riverside City (7-1 overall) opened with a 74-47 win over the West Los Angeles College (WLAC) Wildcats (2-3 overall) last Friday (Nov. 18). Three minutes through the first quarter, RCC broke a 4-4 tie and was never headed again. Riverside led, 28-11, at halftime.
Sophomore forward Paradise Hanchett (Moreno Valley / Rancho Verde HS '15) led RCC with a game-high 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Britney Gonzalez (Fontana / Jurupa Hills HS '15) was next with 14 points.
in the first championship semifinal, Riverside had a battle on its hands with the Mission Coillege Saints. RCC led, 25-14, at the end of the first quarter and led, 41-40, at halftime. Mission led, 65-63, after three quarters before RCC outscored the Saints, 33-19, in the final ten minutes to pull out a 96-84 win and advance to the championship game.
All five RCC starters scored in double figures, led by Hanchett with a team-high 22 poiints and game-high 18 rebounds.
Against the host Comets, the Tigers just couldn't get untracked, trailing, 19-10, at the end of the first quarter and 31-27 at halftime. Palomar outscored RCC, 27-11, in the third quarter for a robust 58-38 lead heading into the final quarter en route to a 75-54 win.
Frosh guard Chiderah Uzowuru (Eastvale / Eleanor Roosevelt HS '14) led RCC with 13 points and a whopping game-high 20 rebounds. Gonzalez added 12 points. Hanchett had nine points and 11 rebounds.
For their efforts, Uzowuru and Hanchett were named to the all-tournament team.
In its next action, Riverside will host the San Diego City College (SDCC) Knights on Saturday, Nov. 26, in a 1 p.m. nonconference tipoff.

Through eight games, Gonzalez leads the Tigers in scoring with 16.1 points per game (ppg, 129 points), followed by Uzowuru (13.8 ppg, 110 points) and Hanchett (12.9 ppg, 103 points). Hanchett leads with 111 rebounds (13.9 rebounds per game, followed by Uzowuru with 96 rebounds (12.0 rebounds per game). Uzowuru leads with 36 assists (4.5 per game).
