RIVERSIDE -- The Cypress College Chargers broke open a tight game after the first quarter and cruised to an 87-54 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) win over the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team Wednesday night (Feb. 9) at historic Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.
Cypress (21-6 overall, 8-2 OEC) led only, 20-18, after the first quarter. And there was hope for RCC considering it had been outscored, 23-3, in the first quarter at Cypress last month.
But the Chargers outscored the Tigers, 24-10, in the second stanza and led, 44-28, at halftime. Cypress outscored RCC, 31-10, in the third quarter.
Six Chargers scored in double figures, including four starters as frosh forward Monique Mesa (Whittier / Cantwell HS) came off the bench to pour in a game-high 15 points.
For Riverside (15-11, 5-5 OEC), frosh guard DoyleBonet Walker led the Tigers with 13 points. Frosh forward Paradise Hanchett (Moreno Valley / Rancho Verde HS) had a game-high nine rebounds for RCC.
RCC will continue OEC action on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. when it visits the Orange Coast College Pirates, while Cypress will have a bye.
