Riverside (6-1) Rallies to 64-59 Home Win over Rio Hondo Saturday

RIVERSIDE -- With three starters scoring in double figures, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team outlasted the visiting Rio Hondo College (RHC) Roadrunners, 64-59, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 28) in a non-conference game at RCC's historic Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.

Riverside (6-1 overall) saw Rio Hondo (1-7 overall) jump out to its big lead of 22-12 lead with 6:36 to play in the second quarter, but the Tigers found their stride and went on a 17-2 run (over a span of 5:15) for a 29-24 lead with 1:21 before halftime. Frosh guard DoyleBenet Walker made back-to-back three-pointers for that five-point margin.

Rio Hondo led, 16-8, after the first quarter, but the Tigers led, 30-26, at halftime.

Early in the fourth quarter, Riverside had its biggest lead, 51-42, with 8:56 to play before RHC drew to within 55-53 with 5:16 left. RHC sophomore guard Danna Robles (Claremont / Claremont HS) made a layin to pull the Roadrunners to within two.

But down the stretch, RCC converted seven of ten free throws to keep Rio Hondo at bay.

RCC frosh guard Britney Gonzalez (Jurupa Hills HS '15) poured in a game-high 20 points, sophomore guard Jordan Lofton (Riverside / M.L. King, Jr. HS) added 13 points and Walker chipped in with 12 points. Frosh power forward Tecumseh Madison (Banning HS '15) pulled down a co-game-high 11 rebounds (and added nine points) for the Tigers.

Next for Riverside, the Tigers will participate in the Gilcrest Invitational Tournament at the College of Sequoias (COS) in Visalia which opens on Thursday, Dec. 3. RCC will play the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs at 4 p.m. in COS' Moro (old) Gym.
