Tigers Overcome Poor Free Throw Shooting; Upend Santa Ana, 66-54, Wednesday Night

RIVERSIDE -- Overcoming poor free throw shooting, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team upended the visiting Santa Ana College (SAC) Dons, 66-54, Wednesday evening (Jan. 28) in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game at legendary Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.

Riverside (14-8, 3-3 OEC) made only 16 of 34 (47.1%) free throw attempts, but Santa Ana also didn't do itself any favors, shooting only 25.7% (18 of 70) from the field, including six of 27 from three-point country.

RCC broke a 36-36 tie with a 16-7 run for a 52-43 lead with 4:14 to play, en route to its biggest margin at 65-32 in the last minute. Along the way, sophomore guard Tamara Herring (Riverside / Citrus Hill '12) canned a pair of treys to get the Tigers going. Herring finished with a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore guard Tierra Fuqua (Moreno Valley / Rancho Verde '13) had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She also added a game-high five assists. Sophomore center Tori Mitchell (Riverside / Poly '13) added 12 points and seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Santa Ana (7-15, 1-5 OEC) was led by frosh guard Rachel Cain with 13 points. Sophomore forward Kylie Rodriguez came off the bench to add six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Both teams return to OEC action on the road on Friday, Jan. 30, in a pair of 7 p.m. tipoffs to start the second round of conference play when RCC visits the Fullerton College Hornets and SAC visits the Saddleback College Gauchos.
