Riverside Runs over Rams, Wins, 80-43, over Victor Valley; Herring Makes RCC-record Nine Treys

RIVERSIDE -- Playing both its inside game and outside game to a high caliber, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team make quick work of the Victor Valley College (VVC) Rams, 80-43, in a Wednesday (Nov. 26) afternoon nonconference game at RCC's historic Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.

The game, which started at 5:05 p.m., had only 21 combined personal fouls called, lasted only 1-1/2 hours and was over at 6:35 p.m.

Riverside (6-2 overall), which never trailed, snapped a 5-5 tie with an 8-0 run and built a 13-5 lead only 6-1/2 minutes into the game. The Tigers built a big first-half lead of 38-17 with 3:28 to play before settling for a 38-22 margin at halftime.

Sophomore guard Tamara Herring (Riverside / Citrus Hill HS) pumped in 14 first-half points on five of nine shooting, including four of seven on three pointers, to lead the Tigers. On the inside, RCC sophomore center Tori Mitchell (Riverside / Poly '12) poured in ten first-half points and added six rebounds. Mitchell settled for 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for RCC.

For the game, Herring pumped in a game- and career-high 31 points on 11 of 17 shooting, including nine of 14 on three pointers. The nine treys broke the previous RCC mark of eight which was set by Jenille Ramos versus Fullerton (Feb. 2, 1999) and tied by Shavonne Smith versus Imperial Valley at the Pasadena Tournament (Dec. 8, 2005).

Elsewhere for Riverside, sophomore point guard Tierra Fuqua (Moreno Valley / Rancho Verde HS) added 15 points, dished out five assists and added a game-high nine steals.

Victor Valley (1-5 overall), which played only seven players, was led by frosh guard Bryanna Lopez (Apple Valley / Oak Hills HS) who pumped in a team-high 23 points. Sophomore forward Ashley Robinson (Las Vegas, NV / Clark HS) added 12 points and frosh guard Aryn Ortega (Hesperia / Hesperia HS) added seven points and eight rebounds.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Dec. 4, when they face Solano College at 4 p.m. in an opening round game of the 38th Annual Gilcrest Invitational Tournament, a four-day, 16-team affair at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. Victor Valley will be idle until Dec. 4 as well when it faces host Cuesta College in tournament action.
