Saddleback College Gauchos 52, at Riverside City College Tigers 46

RIVERSIDE – The Saddleback College Gauchos women's basketball team atoned for a horrible first half and bounced back to post a 52-46 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) victory over the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers Wednesday evening (Jan. 8) at Wheelock Gymnasium.

The Saddleback women had all sorts of problems in the opening stanza as they committed 12 turnovers and only made 16 percent (four of 25) of their shots from the floor. RCC wasn't much better as it committed 14 turnovers and made only 36.4% from the floor (eight of 22).  RCC led, 13-2, with 11:52 remaining. Saddleback crept to within, 13-9 with 8:22 left. The Tigers wound up going scoreless for nearly 9-1/2 minutes before a layin by freshman guard Tierra Fuqua (Rancho Verde HS) with 2:24 to play, and a layin by sophomore guard Ryan Robinson (Norco HS) with :01 remaining gave RCC a 17-9 halftime lead.

But Saddleback opened the second half with a 9-0 run and posted its biggest lead, 39-23, with 8:59 to go. Saddleback freshman guard Deja Brooks (Cajon HS) led the Gauchos (10-5, 1-0 OEC) with 16 points. Sophomore center Whitney Braeutigam (Junipero Serra HS) added ten points and a game-high 13 rebounds. For Riverside (5-10, 0-1 OEC), which lost its fifth consecutive game, freshman guard Tierra Fuqua (Rancho Verde HS) came off the bench to drop in a team-high 15 points and added a team-high eight rebounds before fouling out. Freshman forward Ashley Davis (Riverside / John W. North HS) added 11 points for the Tigers. Riverside will return to action on Friday, Jan. 10, when it visits the Santa Ana College Dons. The women play at 7:30 p.m.
