Sporting a modest two-game winning streak, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team reached the .500 level with a 56-38 non-conference win over the visiting San Diego Mesa College (SDMC) Olympians Friday evening at the newly renovated Wheelock Gymnasium.

Riverside (7-7) was tied, 18-18, with 4:39 left in the first half and then went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:39 for a 27-18 advantage with 1:00 left. The Tigers led, 29-20, at halftime. In the second stanza, RCC led, 42-27, with 11:31 left and kept the visiting Olympians at bay as it built its biggest margin at 54-36 with 2:14 left.
Freshman center (6-1) Kayla John (Moreno Valley HS) started, and in her 32 minutes, poured in a co-game-high 17 points and pulled down a whopping game-high 13 rebounds. Reserve freshman guard (5-9) Mikayla Stitt (Riverside / Arlington HS) added 13 points in 28 minutes.
San Diego Mesa (3-6) was led by 5-7 freshman guard Whitney Shirley (Oxnard) with 17 points. Sophomore guard (5-7) Taylor Mills (Oregon City, OR), who played all but the last 30.7 seconds of the game, added eight points and four assists.
With finals week in the collective rear-view mirror of the Tigers, RCC will be idle (for two weeks) until Friday, Dec. 28, when it faces the Los Angeles Valley College Monarchs (for the third time this season) in the opening round of a tournament at Ventura College's VC Athletic Center.
