Snapping a two-game losing streak, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team led from the start to post a 53-44 non-conference win over the visiting MiraCosta College (MCC) Spartans Thursday evening at the newly renovated Wheelock Gymnasium.

Riverside (6-7) was nursing an 11-10 lead, then had an 11-3 run for a big lead of 22-13 with 1:11 left in the first half. In the second half, RCC led, 32-27, and then had a 13-0 run (over a span of 4:39) for a 45-27 advantage, its biggest lead of the game, with 8:48 to play.
Freshman point guard (5-3) Josette Calhoun (Riverside / John W. North HS) led the Tigers with 11 points, followed by 6-2 freshman center Davina Pasillas (Chaffey HS) ten points and eight rebounds. A total of 14 Tigers saw playing time, including 6-1 freshman center Kayla John (Moreno Valley HS), who had a game-high 11 rebounds (and six points) and 5-3 sophomore point guard Wai "Candice" Ngan (United Christian HS) was impressive with a game-high five assists (and three points) in only ten minutes.
MiraCosta (2-9), which had only seven players for the game, was led by 5-8 sophomore guard Megan Fennessy (Del Mar / Torrey Pines HS) with a game-high 17 points and five steals (and a team-high ten rebounds) while playing all 40 minutes. Freshman forward (5-8) Bruce Nelson (Oceanside / Rancho Buena Vista HS), who also played all 40 minutes, had four points and eights rebounds for the Spartans.
In the midst of finals week, Riverside returns to action tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 14, at home against the San Diego Mesa College Olympians in another 5:30 p.m. tipoff. MiraCosta will be idle until Wednesday, Dec. 19, when it visits the College of the Desert Roadrunners in another non-conference game
