A solo homerun compliments of Chaffey's Veronica Macias was the decider in the season opener for the Riverside City College softball squad at the Evans Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Despite sophomore pitcher Synphony Hall (Rialto, CA) tossing a gem in the circle by scattering just six hits, the Tigers ultimately fell by the final score of 1-0.
Hall's lone blunder came in the top of the third inning where she allowed a solo shot to drop just over the left field wall. Aside from that, she was masterful. The sophomore returner fanned five batters and threw over 70 percent strikes while traveling the distance in her first start of the season.
The offense was highlighted by sophomore shortstop Kailee Gilbert (Moreno Valley, CA) who went 2-for-3 at the dish which included a pair of lead-off doubles. She was stranded twice – once in the first inning and once in the sixth inning.
The Tiger defense played very well with freshman second baseman Breanna Ceballos (Ontario, CA) pacing the squad. She made a highlight reel play stretching well into the 3-4 hole and tossed out a speedy runner. Furthermore, she recorded one of four hits for the Tigers. Sophomore right fielder Kayla Giannatasio (Corona, CA) was responsible for the fourth and final base knock.
The Tigers (0-1) will continue play tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the Grossmont College Griffiths at home.
