Cerritos Scores Early & Often; Tops Riverside, 9-4, Monday
RIVERSIDE -- The visiting Cerritos College Falcons posted a pair of three-run innings and went on to a 9-4 non-conference victory over the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers softball team Monday afternoon (Apr. 3) at Brown Field (Samuel C. Evans Park).
Cerritos (21-9 overall) scored three in the top of the first and second innings to lead, 6-0, heading into the bottom of the second inning.
The Falcons added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh frames. The fourth-inning score came on a solo home run by sophomore SS Kylee Brown (Mayfair HS), her 12th round tripper of the season.
Sophomore starting RHP Jissel Caballero (Warren HS) went the distance for the Falcons to improve to 8-1 overall. Caballero allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk. She also struck out four and helped her own cause when she clubbed a three-run home run in the second, her seventh circuit clout of the campaign.
For Riverside (12-14 overall), RCC starting sophomore RHP Laura Mendez (Rialto - Carter HS) lasted only one inning plus and allowed six runs (all earned) on five hits and four walks as her record dipped to 7-9.
Sophomore 1B/LHP Emily Wilcox (Alta Loma - Alta Loma HS) -- who is pictured -- pitched the five middle innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Cerritos returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, Apr. 4, when it visits El Camino College - Compton Center in a South Coast Conference - South Division game at 3 p.m. RCC will next play on Wednesday, Apr. 5, when it visits the Golden West College Rustlers in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game at 3 p.m.
