Santiago Canyon Secures 7-4 win over host Riverside City Friday

RIVERSIDE -- The Satiago Canyon College (SCC) Hawks built a seven-run lead early and came away with a 7-4 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) victory over the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's softball team Friday (Apr. 3) afternoon at Brown Field (Evans Sports Complex).

Santiago Canyon (20-8 overall, 9-6 OEC) put across five rune in the top of the second (four earned) on seven hits (including four doubles) for a 5-0 lead after 1-1/2 innings of play.

The Hawks added a pair of runs in the fourth on five singles for a 7-0 lead.

Riverside (10-21, 4-11 OEC) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore SS Jessica Valenzuela (Rialto / Aquinas HS) singled to right-center field to open the frame. Sophomore DP Kaylie Garcia (Grand Terrace / Colton HS) followed with a walk. Up stepped frosh catcher Hunter LaCroix (Norco / Norco HS) who socked a 2-1 pitch over the right-field fence for a three-run home run to get the Tigers back into the game at 7-3.

The Tigers added a run in the seventh when LaCroix hit a ground ball to the shortstop with the bases loaded and two outs to chase home the final run of the game. Valenzuela went two for four for RCC.

Frosh DP Alexa Guerra went three for four with three RBI to pace the Hawks. Frosh CF Jessica Daniel also went three for four for SCC.

Frosh starting RHP Riley Nahrwold went the first five innings plus and allowed three runs (all earned), six hits, three walks and struck out one to improve to 9-2.

RCC sophomore starting RHP Alexis Holman (Riverside / John W. North HS) went the first four innings and scattered 12 hits, and allowed the seven runs (six earned), walked none and struck out none as her record fell to 5-13.

Riverside will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 8, when it hosts the Saddleback College Gauchos at 3 p.m.
