Tigers Throttle Southwestern with 8-0 "Mercy Rule" Win at Home

Propelled by a 13-hit attack, including six doubles, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's fastpitch softball team won its third consecutive game by posting a five-inning, 8-0 "mercy rule" home victory over the visiting Southwestern College Jaguars Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8) at Brown Field (Evans Sports Complex).

Frosh 3B Breanna Valles (Riverside / Roosevelt HS) and sophomore CF Desiree Broussard (Moreno Valley View HS) each stroked a pair of doubles to pace the Tigers' offense.

A pair of three-run innings (in the first and fourth frames) staked RCC to a 7-0 lead. Frosh 1B Kaylie Garcia (Grand Terrace / Colton HS) stroked her first home run of the season, a two-run blast to centerfield, to up the advantage to 7-0.

In the fateful fifth, with two outs, frosh pinch hitter Malia Campbell (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) blooped a single into short right field before Valles ripped a double into the right-center field gap which enabled Campbell to race around the bases with the game-ending run.

Frosh RHP Bailey Powell (Riverside / Notre Dame HS) went the distance, scattered four hits and struck out two to improve to 2-1. Southwestern starting RHP Brianna Conser (Chula Vista) went the first three innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts as her record leveled to 1-1.

Frosh 1B Sonia Mazon (Chula Vista HS) had two singles for Southwestern (2-2).

With the win, Riverside (3-1) will begin defense of its 2013 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) championship on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when it visits the Santiago Canyon College Hawks in a 3 p.m. start.
