Tigers Take Second at Co-Hosted (with CBU) Riverside City Invitational (8.0 Km) Friday; RCC Won 4.0-mile Invite

RIVERSIDE -- Posting a solid second-place, finishing only behind a four-year university, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's cross country team competed well in the Second Annual Riverside City Invitational Friday (Oct. 7) at the Riverside City Cross Country Course.

The event was co-hosted by RCC and California Baptist University and the course -- a former golf course -- is located by the Riverside City Fire Station at 1077 Orange Street.

Cal Baptist won the 8.0-kilometer race with a team score of 21 points, followed by RCC (53 points), Cal Poly Pomona (65) and El Camino (108). La Sierra University had two racers in the event, but no team score.

Dennis Messner (CBU) won the race with a time of 25:21.85.

RCC was paced by sophomore Joshua Silva (Corona / Corona HS '15), who was fifth overall (25:29.12), followed by sophomore Michael Simpson (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS '15), who was 12th overall (26:03.97), and sophomore Carlos Ramirez (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15), who was 13th overall (26:05.88).

Next for RCC were freshman Darvale "Terry" Jackson (Riverside / John W. North HS '16), who was 18th overall (26:40.94) and freshman Michael Robinson (Riverside / M.L. King HS '16), who was 19th overall (26:48.33) to round out the team scoring. Sophomore Cade Clark (Corona / Santiago HS '15) was 22nd overall (27:04.99) and sophomore Cristian Malloy (Murrieta / Vista Murrieta HS '15) was 25th overall (27:16.91) to complete the top seven finishers for the Tigers.

In the 4.0-mile race, Riverside had the top three finishers, five of the top seven and seven of the top ten as it finished first with a team score of 19 points, followed by Chaffey (49 points), College of the Desert (82) and Golden West (86).

RCC sophomore Isaiah Quiambao (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) -- who is pictured -- won the race with a time of 22:18.06, followed by freshman Melvin Esteva (La Sierra HS), who was second (22:33.22), and freshman Jeffrey Robbins (Riverside / Riverside Poly HS), who was third (22:35.72). Freshman Alec Hall (Norco HS) was sixth overall (22:55.89) and freshman Daniel Harper (Riverside / La Sierra HS '16) was seventh overall (22:59.24).

After being idle for one week before this race, Riverside will be idle for a week after this race and will next be in competition when it participates in the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Titan Invitational on Friday, Oct. 21. Race time is 5 p.m.
