Tigers Take Fourth at CCCAA Championships; Silva Places Tenth, Earns All-America Status

FRESNO -- Finishing fourth in the state for the second time in the last four seasons, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's cross country team concluded its season at the 52nd Annual California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Men's Cross Country Championships Saturday morning (Nov. 21) at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Riverside was ranked No. 2 in Southern California and No. 3 in the state in the latest polls heading into Saturday's final.

Riverside posted a fourth-place team score of 139 points over the 4.0-mile course. American River College (ARC) won with a team score of 67 points, followed by Mt. San Antonio (116) and College of the Canyons (123). Hartnell College rounded out the first five (159). It was ARC's fourth state title in five seasons as the Beavers were runners-up in 2014.

Glendale was sixth (181), followed by San Bernardino Valley College (187), Cuyamaca (218), Saddleback (254) and Orange Coast (256).

For ARC head coach Rick Anderson, it was his fifth state title. His first came in 2005 and his teams were runners-up in 2003 and 2010 before their 2011-13 three-peat.

Canyons' sophomore Ethan Walker won the race (20:09.8) with a seven-second margin over Saddleback sophomore Ulysses Orozco (20:16.2) and Glendale sophomore Vahagn Isayan (20:17.0) in a near dead-heat for runner-up.

RCC had two finishers among the first 16 places, led by freshman Joshua Silva (Corona / Corona HS '15), who was tenth (20:49.2), followed by freshman Michael Simpson (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS '15) was 16th overall (20:54.2). With his top 14 finish, Silva was accorded All-America honors.

Other Riverside finishers were sophomore Jeronimo Brito (Corona / La Sierra HS '14), who was 22nd overall (21:02.5), freshman Anthony Arvizu (Temecula / Great Oak HS '15), who was 40th overall (21:26.3), freshman Cris Malloy (Murrieta / Vista Murrieta HS '15), who was 55th overall  (21:40.4), freshman Isaiah Quiambao (Riverside / M.L. King, Jr. HS '15), who was 56th overall (21:40.4), and freshman Austin Chavez (Palm Springs / Palm Springs HS '15), who was 69th overall (21:51.2).

The top ten finish was Riverside's fifth since 2007 under the guidance of RCC ninth-year head cross country coach Jim McCarron. The Tigers also finished fourth in 2012 and were sixth in 2008, ninth in 2010 and tenth in 2011.

Riverside was state champion in 1991 and 1994.
