Riverside Races to Second-place Finish at SoCals, Advances to CCCAA Championships Nov. 21

SAN DIEGO -- Racing to its highest finish since 1994, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's cross country team posted a second-place finish at the Southern California Championships (SoCals) Friday (Nov. 6) at Mission Bay Park in San Diego.

The runner-up placing also was Riverside's fourth top five finish since 2007 under the guidance of RCC ninth-year head cross country coach Jim McCarron.

The Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in Southern California and No. 3 in the state.

Riverside posted a team score of 100 points over the 4.0-mile course. Mt. San Antonio College won the event with a team score of 82 points. RCC was followed by third-place San Bernardino Valley College (124 points), fourth-place College of the Canyons (142) and fifth-place Saddleback College (153).

Other Orange Empire Conference (OEC) teams posting a team score were: seventh-place Orange Coast College (216 points), eighth-place Santa Ana College (221), 20th-place Santiago Canyon College (568), and 22nd-place Fullerton (581).

Michael Teran of San BernadinoValley won the race with a time of 20:31.2.

RCC had three finishers among the top 15 places, led by freshman Joshua Silva (Corona / Corona HS '15), who was sixth (20:49.77), followed by freshman Michael Simpson (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS '15) was ninth overall (21:02.7), and sophomore Jeronimo Brito (Corona / La Sierra HS '14), who was 15th overall (21:17.6).

Elsewhere for Riverside, freshman Anthony Arvizu (Temecula / Great Oak HS '15) was 34th overall (21:44.5), freshman Isaiah Quiambao (Riverside / M.L. King, Jr. HS '15) was 36th overall (21:45.2), freshman Cris Malloy (Murrieta / Vista Murrieta HS '15), was 60th overall  (22:12.8, 58th) and freshman Austin Chavez (Palm Springs / Palm Springs HS '15) was 82nd overall (22:29.0, 79th).

"The depth and packing of this team have been the keys to our success all season," said McCarron.

RCC's final meet will be on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the CCCAA Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno at 9 a.m.
