Tigers Race Convincingly & Win Orange Empire Conference Championship Friday

IRVINE -- Finishing with five racers among the first ten places, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's cross country team came through with a convincing performance and won the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Championships Friday (Oct. 30) at Mason Regional Park in Irvine.

It was the fourth OEC crown under the guidance of RCC ninth-year head cross country coach Jim McCarron. It also was RCC's third meet victory of the season (in six starts).

The Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in Southern California and No. 3 in the state.

Riverside posted a team score of 35 points over the 4.0-mile course. RCC was followed by the second-place Saddleback College Gauchos (65 points), Santa Ana (73), Orange Coast (81), Santiago Canyon (134), Fullerton (150), and Golden West (208).

Ulysses Orozco of Saddleback won the race with a time of 20:34.56.

RCC had five finishers among the top ten places, led by freshman Joshua Silva (Corona / Corona HS '15), who was second (20:47) in a field of 81 runners (seven teams), followed by sophomore Jeronimo Brito (Corona / La Sierra HS '14), who was sixth overall (21:10), and freshman Cris Malloy (Murrieta / Vista Murrieta HS '15), who was eighth overall (21:19).

Freshman Anthony Arvizu (Temecula / Great Oak HS '15) was ninth overall (21:20) and freshman Michael Simpson (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS '15) was tenth overall (21:27).

All told, seven RCC racers finished among the top 14 finishers to earn all-OEC honors.

"The depth and packing of this team have been the keys to our success all season," said McCarron. "The race plan was to have our fifth man beat all other team's second man, which is not an easy task, and they executed the plan perfectly."

RCC's next meet will be on Friday, November 6, at the Southern California Championships at Mission Bay Park in San Diego at 9 a.m.

Editor's note: The RCC Tigers women's cross country team also took home the OEC championship, its second conference crown in a row, making it the first time in RCC history that both the men and women have won the OEC XC title in the same season.
