Tigers Place Eighth at SoCals, Advance to State Championship Meet in Two Weeks

ENCINO -- Placing eighth out of 28 teams, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's cross country squad has qualified for the state championship meet to be held in two weeks.

Riverside compiled 246 points (eighth place) at the Southern California Regional Championships hosted by Los Angeles Trade Technical College Woodley Park in Encino on Friday (Nov. 7).

College of the Canyons won the meet with 90 points, followed by Mt. San Antonio College (121 points), San Bernardino Valley College (135 points), Cuesta College (177 points) and Orange Coast College (190 points) to round out the top five.

Southwestern College placed sixth with 208 points, followed by Glendale College (245 points), RCC, El Camino College (270 points) and Saddleback College (287 points) to place in the top ten.

OCC sophomore Lucio Ramirez led the way with another impressive run to win the men's individual championship (20:02.96).

Leading the way for RCC was sophomore Doug Negrete (Chino / La Verne-Damien '13), who was 36th overall (21:08.87). Next was freshman Anthony Munoz (Riverside / La Sierra '14), who was 43rd overall (21:21.37), freshman Julio Martinez (Eastvale / Eleanor Roosevelt '14), who was 47th overall for the Tigers (21:25.76), freshman Jeronimo Brito (Corona / La Sierra '14), who was 62nd overall (21:42.23), freshman Dennis Gonzalez (Cathedral City / Cathedral City '14), who was 63rd overall (21:42.54). Gonzalez is pictured.

Next for Riverside were freshman Heliodoro Rodriguez (Indio / Indio '14), who was 112th overall (22:19.92) and freshman Hector Ruiz (Rialto / Wilmer A. Carter '14), who was 181st overall (23:56.25).

"I am very pleased with how our guys have packed all season and have continued to run strong," said eighth-year RCC head men's cross country coach Jim McCarron. "If they can run like they have been and keep a 25-second gap between our number-one and number-five runner, we can be top 10 at the state championship," added McCarron.

The Tigers will next compete at the state championship meet at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m.
