Men’s Water Polo Defeats Division-II Mercyhurst at CBU Joust Tournament

The Riverside City College men's water polo squad participated in the 2018 Cal Baptist University Joust Tournament on Saturday and faced off against Division II Mercyhurst University and Division I Cal Baptist. Riverside earned a noteworthy win against Mercyhurst by the final score of 13-9 to highlight a 1-1 weekend.

Riverside outscored Mercyhurst in the first three quarters as seen in a first quarter score reading 5-1. Sophomore Andrew Serrano kicked off the action with a goal, backed by scores from sophomores Jacob Bills and Alexis Gutierrez. Freshman Ty Narramore added a score on an advantage leading to a four goal advantage.

Gutierrez continued to dominate the second quarter as her scored the two RIverside goals of the period. Narramore and Kovacs followed with a goal each in the third quarter to hand the Tigers a 9-5 advantage.

Riverside and Mercyhurst traded four goals each in the fourth quarter. Serrano added another score, while Kovacs and Gutierrez tacked on one more each as well. Freshman Ethan Saenz joined the scoring action with a netter leading to a 13-9 win.

Gutierrez paced the team with four goals to go along with two drawn ejections and a steal. Kovacs followed with three goals and two drawn ejections, while Narramore found the back of the net twice and recorded three steals.

Freshman Leonardo Monges earned the win in the cage after hauling in nine saves.

Riverside (5-7, 1-1 OEC) will continue action this Friday, October 5 as they host the RCC Invitational. They will begin the tournament with a showdown against Grossmont at 9:10 a.m.
