Men’s Water Polo Grabs First Win of the Season, Splits in Nyquist Tournament  

The Riverside City College men's water polo team jumped into the pool for its first action of the 2017 campaign by facing off against San Joaquin Delta College and Cabrillo College, respectfully, in the Nyquist Tournament Friday evening. After falling to San Joaquin Delta, 11-8, in the first game, the Tigers came roaring back to defeat Cabrillo by the final score of 16-3, leading to a record of 1-1 on the day.

In the game-two victory, Riverside was very efficient on both ends of the pool by allowing just three scores and producing an offensive output of 16 netters.

The Tigers wasted no time in the first quarter with sophomore driver Pedro Osorio (San Bernardino, CA) firing home a score in the opening minute. Sophomore driver Hunter Starkey (San Bernardino, CA) backed him with a goal of his own, followed by a three-consecutive scores from freshman drivers Obie Plumier (Riverside, CA), Billy Maze (Mira Loma, CA), and Alexis Gutierrez (Mira Loma, CA) to hold a 5-1 advantage after the opening frame.

Riverside did not look back from that moment highlighted by a five-score outburst once again in the fourth quarter. Freshman center Andrew Serrano (Riverside, CA) kicked off the final stanza by netting two-consecutive scores. Freshman Bo Loftin (Mira Loma, CA) capped the scoring off with his second and final goal of the game en route to a 16-3 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kristopher McVeigh (Riverside, CA) earned his first victory of the season after hauling in seven saves in four quarters of action.

Gutierrez led the team with three goals while adding four assists and three steals. Serrano tallied three goals while pocketing two steals.
