Tigers Split on Saturday, Win Three of Four at Cuesta Tournament; Visit Orange Coast Wednesday in OEC Action

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Gaining a split in the second day of competition at the Cuesta Tournament, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's water polo squad has won nine of its first 11 games this season.

Riverside City (9-2 overall) began Saturday's (Sept. 24) action with a 17-12 loss to the San Joaquin Delta College (SJDC) Mustangs, a team that RCC defeated, 13-11, two weeks ago (Sep. 10) at the West Valley College-hosted 52nd Annual Nyquist Tournament.

RCC's undoing proved to be the first quarter, as it was outscored, 6-1. SJDC led, 10-6, at halftime and 15-10 after three quarters.

RCC sophomore utility Kyle Christian (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) -- who is pictured -- led the Tigers with four goals and two assists. Sophomore driver Lazar Raca (Belgrade, SERBIA / Sports School '15) added two goals and two assists. Freshman driver William Moncada (Medellin, COLOMBIA / Calasanz '16) added one goal and picked up five steals.

Time in the goalie cage was split between freshman goalie Kristopher McVeigh (Riverside / Poly HS '16), who had one save and sophomore goalie Dustin Shaw (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15), who had four saves.

In RCC's tournament finale, the Tigers edged the host Cuesta College Cougars, 8-7, thanks to a 5-2 outscoring in the second half after trailing, 5-3, at halftime.

Sophomore driver Jacob Weisenberg (Tustin / Foothill HS '14) and Raca each had two goals, one assist and three steals to pace RCC. McVeigh went the distance in goal and had four saves and three steals.

Riverside will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when it visits the Orange Coast College (OCC) Pirates in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game at 4 p.m.
