Tigers Remain Undefeated with Wins over San Joaquin Delta & Cabrillo; Advance to Semifinal Round Versus Cuesta Saturday

CUPERTINO -- Winning a pair of games to open the 52nd Annual Nyquist Tournament, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's water polo squad remained among the ranks of the unbeaten and has advanced to the championship semifinal round.

The tournament is being hosted by Saratoga-based West Valley College, with games also at De Anza College in Cupertino through Saturday, Sept. 10. RCC will face the Cuesta College Cougars in a semifinal match beginning at 10:45 a.m.

Riverside City (4-0 overall) opened tournament action with a come-from-behind 13-11 victory over the San Joaquin Delta College (SJDC) Mustangs. After playing to a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter, SJDC led, 8-5, at halftime and 10-7 heading into the final stanza where RCC outscored the Mustangs, 6-1, to secure the 13-11 victory.

Later that afternoon, RCC rolled up an 11-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 17-4 win over the Cabrillo College Seahawks.

In the win over SJDC, RCC sophomore utility player Kyle Christian (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) scorede five goals and added one steal to pace the Tigers and sophomore driver Lazar Raca (Belgrade, SERBIA / Sports School '15) added four goals, one assists and two steals.

Freshman goalie Kristopher McVeigh (Riverside / Poly HS '16) started and went the distance. He had eight saves and four steals.

In the win over Cabrillo, RCC led, 13-1, at halftime and 16-2 after three quarters.

RCC freshman center Dalton Gray (Corona / Santiago HS '16) paced the Tigers with four goals.Freshman driver William Moncada (Medellin, COLOMBIA / Calasanz HS '16) chipped in with three goals, one assist and two steals and sophomore driver Jesse Mondragon (Riverside / Ramona HS '15) recorded two goals and two assists.

Sophomore goalie Dustin Shaw (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) -- who is pictured -- went the distance and recorded 12 saves and added one assist and one steal.
