Top-ranked Golden West Tops Riverside, 21-8, in Men's Water Polo

RIVERSIDE -- Getting a first-hand look at its opponents' depth, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's water polo squad dropped a 21-8 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game to the visiting the Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 22) at the Riverside Aquatics Complex on the RCC campus.

Golden West (17-2, 4-0 OEC) stretched a 9-7 third-quarter lead and cruised to the win.

Riverside (6-11, 2-2 OEC) Freshman driver Joseph Rivas (Lake Elsinore / Temescal Canyon HS) led the Tigers with five goals.

"Behind the strong defense of freshman Justin Rohn, the Tigers showed strength against the No. 1-ranked team in the state," said RCC second-year head men's water polo coach Jason Northcott. "We were playing a team which plays three lines deep in every quarter and we were able to hang in there for most of three periods.

"Losing a game by that wide a margin to our rival is always tough to take, but if we look inward at the way we played together, I think there is a lot of positives we can take from this game," continued Northcott.

Next for Riverside, the Tigers will play four games in the Golden West tournament in Huntington Beach this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25.
