Tigers Lose Pair at Cal Baptist

RIVERSIDE -- Losing a pair of games to a pair of four-year institutions at the California Baptist University Mini Tournament, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's water polo squad will have a week off to regroup before opening Orange Empire Conference (OEC) next Wednesday.

Riverside (1-3) lost, 9-8, to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Colleges Stags (1-3) in the 5 p.m. game before the host CBU Lancers (2-2) posted an 18-7 victory over RCC in the 7 p.m. game. In the 3 p.m. game, CBU shaded CMS, 11-10.

In the RCC loss to CMS, the Stags broke a 7-7 tie entering the fourth quarter with a pair of goals (at 6:14 and 3:53) for a 9-7 lead. RCC freshman Joseph Rivas (Lake Elsinore / Temescal Canyon HS), who is pictured to the right, tallied the last of his game-high five goals with 36 seconds remaining.

In the nightcap,  the host Lancers jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led, 5-2, at the end of the first quarter. CBU led, 12-5, at halftime and, 17-5, after three quarters.

Against CBU, RCC freshman Trevor Tripp (Beaumont / Beaumont HS) led the Tigers with three goals, while Rivas scored twice.

RCC freshman goalie Jeremy Mariscal (Lake Elsinore / Jurupa Valley HS) had eight saves in each game for the Tigers.

RCC second-year head men's water polo coach Jason Northcott commented that it's good for us (the Tigers) to play four-year colleges so as to give our guys exposure to the next level.

RCC will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. when it hosts the Saddleback College Gauchos in an OEC opener at the Riverside Aquatics Center.
