Men’s Track & Field Wins Ninth State Championship in Program History

The Riverside City College men's track and field team has continued to ink their names in the state history books. For the ninth time in program history and the seventh time under the direction of Head Coach Jim McCarron, the Tigers have won the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship.

It is their first state title since 2014 after edging out the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties with a point total of 116 points. They accomplished this feat by being the lone team to land in triple digit points. Mt. SAC finished with 73 points, while American River was close behind in third place with 61.

"Right before the conference championships, we met with the team and set an ultimatum to focus on being a cohesive team," said McCarron. "After the meeting, the team's focus, dedication and determination was on point."

Sophomore sprinter Antonio Mitchell was named the Track Athlete of the Meet after dominating every event he participated in. He reigned supreme in the 100 M (10.21), 200 M (21.16) and the 4 x 100 M Relay (40.17). Sophomores Jamal Palmer, Jabriel Smith and Keylan Dennis were responsible for the last three legs of the relay.

Sophomore Alec Jones was named the Field Athlete of the Meet after dominating the Hammer (54.16 m) and placing second in the Discus (49.23m). Sophomore Marcos Gonzalez reigned supreme in the Javelin (61.46m). The two finished in front of the second place finishers by a wide margin.

Freshman Mohamed Mohammed placed second in the 800 M (1:53.78), while Key. Dennis hauled in the bronze medal in the 400 M (47.36). Sophomore Enrique Villa landed on the podium in the 1,500 M (3:59.72) to cap his strong career.

The women placed second with a point total of 82.5. Highlighting the performances is the 4 x 400 M Relay team that placed first (3:53.83). The team was comprised of freshman LaDaijah Wright, Alana Wilson, Annayah Pelt and Madeline Corner. Individually, Pelt placed second in the 400 M (56.89), while freshman Mariah Allain placed third in the 200 M (25.15)

Sophomore Angelique Hudson was crowned the state champion in the Shot Put (13.96) while dominating the field. She landed in first place by over a meter. Freshman Tayler Salley placed third in the Hammer (47.77m)
