Jacob Woods Places Fourth in SoCal Decathlon, Qualifies for State Championships
The Riverside City College men's track and field team saw three competitors participate in the Southern California Decathlon Championships over the past two days. Highlighting the trio of competitors was freshman Jacob Woods who placed fourth overall with a point total of 5,557. Freshman Steven Tinoco finished in seventh place with 5,296 points followed by freshman Jarrod Morris who placed ninth with a point mark of 5,190.
Woods qualified for state with his finish, while Tinoco earned an alternate spot. It is the 12th-consecutive time the Tigers have qualified at least one decathlete to the state championships.
Woods began the two-day event with an 11.33 mark in the 100 M followed by a 6.53m in the Long Jump. He went on to earn a mark of 33' 6" in the Shot Put, backed by a 6' 0.75" leap in the High Jump. He capped his day with a 400 M mark of 53.87 to land him in fifth place after day one.
He was able to leap into fourth place with a strong day two beginning with a 16.53 mark in the 100 M Hurdles and a 5:28.02 time in the 1,500 M. His field events were strong in the Discus (105' 2"), Pole Vault (9' 4.25") and the Javelin (160').
Tinoco earned the most points with his 100 M time of 11.63. He also put together strong performances in the 110 M Hurdles (16.46), 1,500 M (4:52.09) and Long Jump (6.32m).
