Tigers Are in Second Place after Day 1 (of 2) at CCCAA Championships; Gonzalez Signs With Valley City (ND) State University

SAN DIEGO -- Thanks, in part, to a third-place finish by Dennis Gonzalez in the10,000-meter run, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's track and field team is currently in second place after the first day of competition at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Championships which are being hosted at San Diego Mesa College's Merrill Douglas Stadium this Friday and Saturday (May 20-21).

Gonzalez -- who is pictured, along with ninth-year RCC head men's track and field coach Jim McCarron (left) -- signed a letter of intent to attend Valley City State University (N.D.) this fall after placing third (31:26.93) in the state 10,000-meter run. He is a sophomore distance runner from Cathedral City (Cathedral City HS '14), who finished sixth (32:35.56) in the 10,000-meter run at last week's (May 14) CCCAA Southern California (SoCal) Championships, which were hosted at Antelope Valley College. Gonzalez' third-place finish produced six points toward the Tigers' team total (thus far) of 13 points.

In the 10,000-meter run, a pair of Tigers hold the state meet record and the SoCal meet record. Wilhelm Gidasuday holds the state meet record (29:39.31), which was set in 1999, and Julius Kariuki holds the SoCal meet mark (29:22.70), which was set in 1988.

Additionally, in the hammer throw, RCC freshman Christopher Brown (Desert Hot Springs HS) finished fourth (54.40 meters) for five points, and RCC sophomore Zachary Fromm (Jurupa Valley / Patriot HS) finished seventh (49.45 meters) for two points to complete RCC team scoring of 13 points.

The second half of the decathlon events will commence at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 21. The first of the remaining field events will begin at 12 p.m. and the first of the remaining running events will start at 1:30 p.m.
