Tigers Settle For Second Place at SoCal Championships; Head to San Diego Mesa for State Championships Next Weekend

LANCASTER -- Winning five individual events, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's track and field team settled for second place at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California (SoCal) Championships which were hosted at Antelope Valley College last Saturday (May 14).

Riverside City compiled 156 points to finish behind only Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC), which totalled 207 points. The Cerritos College Falcons were third (57 points), followed by fourth-place Glendale (47) and fifth-place Cuesta (39).

Winning individual events on Saturday (May 14) were freshman James Wilson (Fontana / Alta Loma HS) in the triple jump with a P.R. (personal record) of 15.03 meters (49' 3.75"), freshman James Jones (Bremerton, WA / Olympic [WA] HS '11) in the shot put with a throw of 16.61 meters (54' 6"), sophomore Zachary Fromm (Jurupa Valley / Patriot HS) in the discus throw with a massive P.R. of 54.09 meters (177' 5.5"), freshman Christopher Brown (Desert Hot Springs HS) in the hammer throw with a toss of 52.27 meters (171' 6").

In the decathlon, which was contested last Saturday (May 7), freshman Chad Ponicano (Alta Loma / Alta Loma HS '15) placed first with a total of 6,111 points for ten (10) points toward RCC's team total, while sophomore Cole Hicks (Elsinore HS) finished fourth (5,683 points) to garner five (5) points to account for RCC's leading total of 19 points.

Also last Saturday (May 7), sophomore Dennis Gonzalez (Cathedral City / Cathedral City HS '14) finished sixth (32:35.56) in the 10,000-meter run to gain three (3) points toward RCC's team total, while freshman Michael Simpson (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS '15) finished eighth (32:54.36) to attain one (1) point.

"Our guys nailed it today and put themselves in a position to challenge for the state title next week at San Diego Mesa," said ninth-year RCC head men's track and field coach Jim McCarron.

Looking ahead, the Tigers will conclude their season at the the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Championships, which will be held on Friday-Saturday, May 20-21, at San Diego Mesa College, beginning at 10 a.m.
