Soriano Wins Thrice as Tigers Topple Orange Coast, 107-50, Friday

RIVERSIDE -- Highlighted by a triple win, as well as a double victory, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's track and field team defeated the Orange Coast College (OCC) Pirates, 107-50, in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) dual meet at RCC's historic Arthur N. Wheelock Stadium last Friday (Mar. 25).

In the jumps, sophomore Anthony John Soriano (Santa Ana / Eastvale - Eleanor Roosevelt HS) won three events: the high jump (1.95 m), long jump (7.02 m, and triple jump (14.20 m).

Freshman Christopher Brown (Desert Hot Springs HS) won the discus throw (44.96 meters) and the hammer throw (51.55 m).

In the running events, freshman Joshua Silva (Corona / Corona HS '15) won the 800 meters (1:57.69) and freshman Michael Simpson (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS '15) won the 5000 meters (15:53.31).

Other wins in field events were posted by freshman Chad Ponciano (Alta Loma / Alta Loma HS '15) in the javelin throw (47.28 m), freshman Spencer Mills (Murrieta / Murrieta Mesa HS) -- who is pictured -- in the pole vault (4.10 m), and freshman Fernando Rodriguez (Elsinore HS) in the shot put (13.79 m).

"We have had a few injuries this week with key members of the team, but everyone else stepped up to get the victory," said ninth-year RCC head track and field coach Jim McCarron. "The guys are really competing well considering we are in a period of loading in our training."

And there will be no rest for the Tigers as they participate in the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University on Saturday, Mar. 26.

"It is a great opportunity to do a double day with our meet at San Diego State tomorrow," added McCarron.

After the Aztec Invite tomorrow (Saturday, Mar. 26), the Tigers next meet will be on April 5-6  for the Southern California multi-event championship and on April 9-10 at the Cerritos Invitational.
