Host Mt. San Antonio Prevails, 100-45, over Riverside in Fourth Annual "The Duel" Friday

WALNUT -- In the fourth annual "The Duel," the host Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties finally posted a victory in the head-to-head competition with a 100-45 win over the visiting Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's track and field team last Friday afternoon at MSAC's Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

Riverside had won the first three meetings between these two storied programs, including a 93-52 win in 2015. These two teams have combined for 13 of the last 16 California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) championships, with RCC winning six (2008-09-10 and 2012-13-14) of the last nine. MSAC won the 2015 CCCAA (state) crown.

In 2013, RCC won, 101-44, at home. In 2014, RCC won, 84-61, at MSAC.

"Mt. SAC came out strong this season and it earned a victory against us in the fourth annual 'Duel', said RCC ninth-year head men's track and field coach Jim McCarron. "We have a lot of work to do as a team, but this group has a lot of potential," continued McCarron.

Posting an individual victory was Josh Silva ran 4:24 in the mile. (Yes, the mile, not 1500- or 1600 meters.) Also winning events were Zachary Fromm in the discus throw (personal record: 48.02m / 157' 6-1/2") and the hammer throw (43.20m / 141' 9"), James Jones in the shot put (personal record: 16.11m / 52' 10-1/4"), and Cole Hicks in the javelin throw (personal record: 50.58m / 165' 11").

Fromm also had a P.R. (personal record) in the shot put (14.92m / 48' 11-1/2"). Also posting a P.R. was John Soriano in the high jump (2.07m / 6' 9-1/2")

The Tigers will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 19, when they host an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) double dual meet against Golden West College and Santa Ana College, which will be their first OEC competition of the year.  The meet will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the field events before the running events begin at 3 p.m.
