Riverside Wins Third Straight Men's State Championship; Moten (110mHH) and Einck (shot put) Win State Crowns

WALNUT - It was almost a foregone conclusion that Riverside City College was going to secure its third straight - and sixth in the last seven years - CCCAA State Men's Track and Field championship on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
Although the Tigers won just two events, they qualified athletes in 12 different events and used point-scorers in multiple events to finish with 111 team points. American River College finished in second place with 83 team points, with South Coast Conference rivals Cerritos (64) and Mt. San Antonio (62) taking third and fourth, respectively.
The Tigers two state champions in the 2014 meet were Keithyon Moten in the 110-meter high hurdles (:14.29) and Connor Einck in the shot put (59' 6-3/4").
The highlight of the state championship came in the men's 100-meter dash, as Kemarley Brown of Merritt College turned in the fastest time in the world this year at 9.93 seconds. It was also a National Community College and State Championship record, eclipsing the old mark of 10.05 set by Ryan Bailey of Rend Lake (IL) CC. Brown was also the only double-winner this season and won the 100 meters for the second year in a row.
Cerritos decathlete Thomas Cheval used a strong time in the final event (1500 meters) to overtake Miles Poullard of Mt. San Antonio to win the championship. His 7,175 points are the most among national community college athletes this season.
On the women's side, Mt. San Antonio College relied on a double win by sprinter Sarah Dumnore in the 100 meters and 200 meters to capture its state-leading 11th championship. It was their first crown since it shared the title with El Camino College in 2011. The Mounties held off defending state champion Cerritos, 88-75, which had a double-winner in thrower Destiny Mack-Talalemotu. The Falcons concluded the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 1600-meter relay and secured second place ahead of Riverside City College, which finish in third place with 73 points.
Kortni Smyers-Jones of Laney College earned a pair of wins, which included a state meet record of :13.50 in the 100-meter high hurdles.
The Riverside women also had two state champions in 2014: Shebanet'te Terry in the 400 meters (:55.42) and Taylor Coffelt in the javelin throw (148' 5").
Brown was named the Male Athlete of the Meet, while Dunmore received the Female Athlete of the Meet honor.
