Riverside Steps Up in Singles, Defeats SDCC in Season Opener

The Riverside City College men's tennis team kicked off its 2019 campaign by hosting the San Diego City College Knights in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers found themselves in a battle after dropping two of the three doubles matches. However, Riverside thrived in the singles performances by going 4-2 thus hauling in a 5-4 victory.

Sophomore Mile Clark and freshman Gleb Mityurin teamed up and reigned supreme in the number one doubles team by a dominating score of 8-2. They each went on to win their singles matches as well. Clark, who acted as the top singles player, defeated his opponent in two sets at 7-5, 6-1. Mityurin followed with a two-set victory with scores reading 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman David Garcia stepped up and hauled in a crucial three-set victory at the fourth position with his scores reading 3-6, 6-4, 10-6. Sophomore Ayrton Aviles dominated the fifth position at 6-0, 6-1 to earn a victory.

Riverside (1-0) will continue action on Thursday, January 31 at home as they face off against the Mt. San Jacinto College Eagles at 2 p.m.
