San Diego Mesa Tops Tigers, 6-3, in Regular Season Finale

San Diego Mesa Tops Tigers, 6-3, in Regular Season Finale

RIVERSIDE -- In the regular season finale, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 non-conference home decision to the visiting San Diego Mesa College (SDMC) Olympians Thursday (April 4) at RCC's Fran Bushman Courts.

Riverside (17-5 overall) won the first singles match (at No. 2) before falling behind, 4-2, after singles. San Diego Mesa, a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, is 13-9 overall.

"Freshman David Stanko got the Tigers started picking up the "Eco Boost" award with a quick victory at the #2 spot," said RCC head coach Jim Elton.

S.D. Mesa quickly turned the table and took a 4-1 lead winning at #3 and #5 in straight sets and at #1 and #4 in three set matches.

"Conner Stephenson kept the Tigers alive coming back from a first set loss to bring home a solid three set victory at #6," added Elton.

Needing to sweep doubles to secure the match, the Tigers fell behind early and couldn't catch up at #2 and #3 doubles.

"Danny Garcia and Conner Stephenson looked impressive in the #1 doubles spot, winning 8-3."

The Tigers now wait the Southern California Regional Playoff and seeding meeting on Sunday, Apr. 6.  RCC expects to be selected as one of the four wildcard teams.  The eight-team So Cal Regionals will begin Tuesday, Apr. 8, at 2 p.m.
