NCAA Div. III power Amherst (MA) Blanks Riverside, 9-0

NCAA Div. III power Amherst (MA) Blanks Riverside, 9-0

RIVERSIDE -- Absorbing its first shut-out of the season, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's tennis team lost, 9-0, to the visiting Amherst (Mass.) College Lord Jeffs Friday afternoon (March 21) at RCC's Fran Bushman Courts.

Amherst (14-2), a perennial NCAA Division III power, is in the midst of a daunting road trip through Southern California this week, having played at least two -- and sometimes four -- (split squad) matches a day since last Monday (Mar. 17), thanks to a roster of no less than 21 players. The Lord Jeffs are currently ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA Div. III poll.

Amherst had its eight-match win streak snapped earlier on Friday when it lost, 3-6, at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Colleges. The CMS Stags eliminated the Lord Jeffs, 5-0, in the semifinals at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Championships.

"The Lord Jeffs of Amherst College dominated the Tigers," said RCC head coach Jim Elton. "The Tigers competed at every position, posting some respectable scores, but the Tigers were no match for the Jeffs."

The Tigers (14-4) now prepare to return to Orange Empire Conference play with a match at Fullerton College on Thursday, March 27, at 2 p.m.
